Hey there, fashionistas! It’s time to talk about a crucial element in the world of fashion – knowing your measurements. Whether you’re a trendy twenty-something or a fabulous fifty-something, understanding your body’s dimensions is the key to unlocking your style potential and ensuring that your online shopping experience is a total success.
Why Measure Up?
So, you might be wondering, why is knowing your measurements so important, especially when shopping online? Well, my fashion-forward friends, here’s the deal: fashion isn’t just about looking good; it’s about feeling great in what you wear. And the first step to nailing that is understanding your unique shape and size.
Sure, you’ve got your basic bust, waist, and hip measurements, but that’s just the tip of the style iceberg. Let’s dive deeper into why those other measurements matter:
1. Shoulder Circumference: Your shoulders can make or break an outfit. Too tight, and you’re in for a night of discomfort. Too loose, and you risk looking frumpy. Measure those shoulders to ensure a perfect fit every time.
2. Length from Shoulder to Floor: This measurement is a must when shopping for dresses, skirts, and even pants. It ensures that your clothing hits just right, making you look effortlessly chic.
3. Feet and Calf Measurements: When it comes to shoe shopping, knowing your foot and calf measurements ensures that those boots are made for walking – comfortably! No more squeezing into shoes that don’t fit.
How to Measure Like a Pro
Fear not, my stylish friends; measuring yourself is a breeze! Grab a flexible measuring tape (not a construction measuring tape), and let’s get started:
Bust: Measure around the fullest part of your chest, ensuring the tape is comfortably snug.
Natural Waist: Find the narrowest part of your torso, usually above your belly button. Measure here, but don’t suck in – be your fabulous self!
Hips: Measure around the fullest part of your hips and derriere. If your bottom belly falls into the measurement area at the widest point of your hip, include it! Measure around everything that will be inside your garments at that point of measurement.
Shoulder Circumference: Measure from the edge of one shoulder to the other, around your back and front. I found this easiest if measured separately then added together to get the circumference.
Length from Shoulder to Floor: Stand up straight, measure from your shoulder down to the floor.
Feet: Trace your foot on a piece of paper, then measure from the heel to the longest toe. Do this for both feet. Often one is larger either in width or length and you want to accommodate for the larger of the two. To get the width, measure around the ball of the foot including bunions if present.
Calf: measure around the widest part of your calf. I found this best to do when my legs were most swollen in the day (typically at night). Also, measure both calves. Often one is larger than the other. Use the larger of the two measurements when shopping.
